About Self Juana Summers
Juana Summers feels “an incredible sense of responsibility.” After working for NPR for many years as a political journalist, she assumed one of the presenter positions on “All Things Considered” in June 2022. Almost a year into her new position, she views herself as a leader in creating a space where people may feel heard and represented on the news programme and throughout NPR.
Summers thinks that part of that starts with the audience becoming familiar with her.
Summers, 34, who grew up in the Midwest and attended expensive Catholic schools, said: “I am never setting at the door that I am a Black woman, I am a stepparent, I am a woman who grew up in a low- and middle-income family, and who went to private schools. The extent to which I lean into each of those dynamics changes from story to story, but they all influence how I approach my work.
Summers is one of four women of color—three of them Black—who have stepped forward to anchor prominent NPR programmes in the previous 12 months. After Michel Martin, a seasoned NPR anchor, joined Leila Fadel on “Morning Edition” in January 2022, the show became home to Leila Fadel.
In March 2022, Ayesha Rascoe took over as “Weekend Edition Sunday” host. They play more than just the voices reading the headlines. They are all influential editors who have great control over what and who is covered.
