Zahid Zaman appeared to be an important member of the neighborhood.
When the 43-year-old came to Percy Main, North Shields, in 2007, he gave off the impression of being a kind neighbor who would go above and beyond for anyone.
However, the mask soon came off, and he started making the lives of everyone around him unbearable.
Jimmy Prout, a defenseless man who was tortured and killed, was the victim of his campaign of fear on St Stephen’s Way in the end.
Prior to influencing a bunch of outcasts and planning one of the most horrifying killings Tyneside has ever seen, Zaman concealed behind an air of civility.
Zaman appeared to take great pleasure in deceiving others as he repeatedly spoke falsehoods.
He claimed to be an animal lover while becoming unbelievably brutal towards a man he had previously considered a brother.
He claimed that a vehicle accident left him in need of a wheelchair, although witnesses testified at his trial that they had seen him jogging up the street and carrying furniture.
Zaman further said that Jimmy’s murder was the work of the outcasts in his bizarre cult, but it was actually him who carried out a series of brutal attacks that led to Jimmy’s protracted and agonizing demise.
The larger community was unaware for a long time that Zaman was anything other than the pleasant neighbor he presented himself to be.
He was mentioned in a Chronicle article from March of last year for his role in bringing a distressed family and their missing dog together.
When the pet vanished close to Zaman’s residence on St. Stephen’s Way, the owner approached him for assistance after noticing the house’s CCTV cameras.
We now know that he painstakingly and compulsively recorded his neighbors using the array of cameras, giving one guy the impression that he was “living under surveillance.”
When the lost dog was located, Zaman refused to take payment for his work, saying the dog owner’s satisfaction was sufficient compensation.
He said: “It gives me a sense of purpose, it feels really good to be able to help someone,” in remarks that now have ominous overtones. Just that she got her puppy back makes me happy. Personally, I adore animals, therefore I think it’s a positive conclusion.
But the neighbors were persuaded that these were just more falsehoods meant to cover up the reality that he was making their lives miserable and there was nothing they could do to stop it.
Even the great and the good brushed shoulders with Zaman; however, they were unaware that the guy they were posing for photographs with was a killer who was already making his neighbors’ lives miserable.
He was photographed in 2014 at the People’s Kitchen’s Christmas Party for the Homeless alongside the mayors of Gateshead and Newcastle.
A grinning Zaman can be seen portraying himself as a kind charity worker who was there to assist others who were less fortunate than himself while seated on his wheelchair.
He was able to conceal the truth for a while, but this week a jury was able to see through his deception and find him guilty of murdering Jimmy.
